A break in the cloud

rain study
©2011 Lisa Le Quelenec

Rain and lots of it at the moment here in Dorset. It seems we will have a slight respite this afternoon before the next lot arrives. For now my roof is holding, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it is now fixed. I'm off to hand in some work for the Holly & Hayloft exhibition this afternoon which runs until 21st December. Fingers crossed the rain hold off until after the hand in. Soggy pictures are no fun ;o)

Anyway, a small study of rain over the sea. Distant rain suggested with tone and closer bouts sketched in with a hard pencil and indenting the paper with a finger nail to emboss. The watercolour then ran into the dents drying darker. Something to develop further perhaps...

Very atmospheric and beautiful granulation of the pigments happening.

It makes me think of my bones and the chill in the air, but in a most dramatic and positive way.

What paper are you using?

Best wishes, (Zoe)

Very atmospheric study. I have a love/hate thing with rain too Lisa but when you're treated to inspiring views like this .. it's not that bad really is it?!
I use an old Conte pencil scraper to get back to paper (for highlights like tree trunks) but if I get it wrong (and I often do) it fills with darker colour. It's very difficult to get right methinks.

Hi Lisa, I like the patch of light on the horizon as the dark rain clouds move over the sea. Nice colours in this small study. I hope the weather improves for you soon.

Hi Teresa, thank you. :o)

Hello Zoe, we've been lucky really here so far. It's been very wet but really mild for the time of year. Just a bit chilly in the evening really. At the moment I'm using up some paper I've had a little while which I think is Saunders Waterford NOT. It's not my favourite but nice to work on all the same. -keep warm.

Hi Michael, I love how everything in watercolour is such a challenge. I don't think there is a single aspect that is easy... keeps it interesting and fun in a sometimes frustrating way :o)

Hello Caroline, thank you. We've had some lovely sunshine inbetween heavy showers today which was lovely. There's been some lovely cloud shapes to draw and I'll think there will be more tomorrow. Have you been getting inspired by these lovely skies?

Hi there Lisa!... A forceful and "believable" rendition of a rainstorm... sheeting as it does... with or without the etching!

Certainly could make a powerful subject in a larger format! But this wee study says all that need be said... despite its small format! Well done!

Good Painting... and Brighter skies!
Warmest regards,
Bruce

Dear Lisa, just wanted to let you know I am still here. I follow all your postings and will do my best to drop in at the Hayloft to see your exhibited work. Shame we didn't manage to organise a second sketching day but that is no reason for not arranging one soon. I am beavering away quietly developing my oil painting techniques and have found that an intensive foundation course in traditional method subtractive indirect painting has resolved problems and removed uncertainties about the process. Still love your work. Keep well and happy. Roger x

Hello Roger, it's so good to hear from you, I've missed reading your blog. Hasn't this year passed quickly? The next couple of weeks are hectic for me as xmas show deadlines are looming but once out of the way I would be delighted to meet for a catch up and who knows the weather may be kinder to us in winter than it was in summer. It's great to hear that you are still painting and I can't wait to find out all about your oil painting discoveries. Best wishes.

Hi Bruce, thank you. I was toying with the idea of a large format acrylic on this theme but I'm not sure if I'm brave enough... there is so much that can go horribly wrong with this kind of light effect. I think I'm quite a few studies away from attempting it - much more observation needed.... any excuse for a trip to the beach ;o) Have a great day.

I love all the different grays in the cloud, sky and water! Beautiful rendition of rain!

Hello Meera, welcome. Thank you so much for stopping by and taking the time to comment. We've had quite a bit of rain but today the sun is shining and it's beautiful so I'm off to the beach. Have a great day.
