Another moon inspired painting - trying to capture the beautiful hazy and subtle coloured rings that surrounded it. There is something very restful and calming about painting night scenes that I really enjoy.

I previously wrote about July's moon being named a thunder moon by some people. We were certainly treated to a spectacular electrical storm that lasted many hours in the late afternoon and stretching into the night on Tuesday. The rain was very heavy as the sky lit up. I didn't venture out but watched for some time from inside. I imagine had I been on the cliff top I may have seen something akin to this as the torrential rain started to move in;

Jurassic coast

A tiny tiddler of an etching plate - an experiment on a scrap no bigger than two fingers. The plate just has the outline of land shapes and a horizon. A sketch - an idea - a nugget to mine in the future maybe. Who knows? Commissions are keeping me very busy so Murphy's law says that my brain will throw lots of ideas out whilst I don't have the time to develop them and when I do have the time they will disappear in a wisp of smoke. I am burying these gems in a sketchbook for later prospecting.

Along the Jurassic coast path

The Jurassic coast footpath covers 95 miles of beautiful scenery, stretching from Exmouth in Devon to Old Harry Rocks in Dorset. It is England’s first natural UNESCO World Heritage Site and if you have the chance to visit it you will soon see why.

This little etching is from a sketch, a first response, made years ago on one of my first visits. I was struck by the patterns of the fence posts disappearing and leading on through sections of the path. It's not the usual impression people leave with, it doesn't have the iconic romanticism of Durdle Door or Lulworth Cove or any of the other beautiful spots along this bit of coastline. I think it made an impression on me for being so ordinary and overlooked. I liked the pattern it made in the landscape.

Bloggoversary 2

Today I am raising a coffee mug to 2 years of blogging. When I look at numbers I find it astonishing I mean really.. 38,855 page views? That is incredible. What is even more incredible and cannot be quantified are the friends that have been made and just how many people have touched my life through this medium. I may never get to meet them in 'the real' but I appreciate all their support and kindness.

In celebration of being a part of this amazing community I would like to offer up this painting in a giveaway. It will come mounted in a pale cream board wrapped in cellophane.

I stood on the cliff top on Monday watching the texture trail made by a lazy current. At around 9am the sun was shining so weakly through thickish grey cloud that it looked like a white disk, a hard outline like a paper cut out. There was no wind but it was cold. Below, on the beach, a dog walker was throwing a ball into the sea for his labrador to go fetch. The dog was enjoying the game and didn't seem to notice what must have been very cold water. It seemed like they were the only moving things and everything else was just waiting for the cold to pass.

I enjoy painting the silver greys of winter and used a very limited palette for this one of buff titanium, indigo, indanthrene blue and zinc white. I wanted to capture the stillness, like a pause before spring arrives.
