Using the same printing plate I have made four images, each different, by working further with acrylic and printing ink. Much like a view changing with progressing light, in each image I have tried to capture a progressing moment - like a burst shot by a camera. I am fascinated by the way the same view from the same position is never the same because of the changing light through weather and season, a kind of homage to Monet's Rouen Cathedral, haystacks and lily ponds in a way. I have been looking and appreciating their multiple variations lately. The first in the set of four is available in my Folksy Store.

One of the prints made and rejected from the previous post was too dark and over inked so I used the print as the plate and ran it through the press with paper over (like tonking an oil painting in a way). This resulted in a reversed image with some pleasing subtleties of texture. I worked into it whilst still wet which gave a much softer and hazier finish. Once dried I could add a moon for a feeling of the winter nights to come.

Small changes in the inking of one collagraph plate, a progression of light in one view with mixed media. I am enjoying working without colour for a while....I feel that I don't need the distraction but I wonder if that will change....

Oh the irony....I am having a very silent time with an ear infection. Much nicer to imagine the silence of snow which they appear to be having further north -  drizzly rain for us in the south.

This is an older piece that I found when having a studio tidy that somehow didn't make it into the shop. It reminds me of recent frosty walks down by the river. It has been cold but sunny and with such beautiful muted colours.

I have been enjoying looking up just lately. Evenings have been noticeably drawing in and the weather feels on the turn. The recently endless blue is now filling with some quite dramatic cloudscapes - much more interesting to record... I think there will be some clouds on my horizon.

I am working on extending this series and have a couple more paintings 'on the go' . As I work on more than one painting at a time they all evolve together each one informing and developing each other in a constant conversation. I had thought I had finished two but when I went to the studio yesterday I could see that they weren't. A mini breakthrough on one has meant adjustments on the other two... It's all to the good.

It's funny but when I started working on these I had envisioned mark making being an important aspect of the series but it has really taken a back seat. The work has once more taken a life of it's own and is dictating it's own path which I am happy to follow and so the conversation continues.

Two small preparatory works using graduated ink in a monoprint overlayed with colour pencil. I'm still thinking about verticals of light, contrasts, lost and found edges. If you haven't tried it soft colour pencils on top of printing textures are rather lovely to explore, you can get some very subtle colour shifts. I have been using mostly Caran d'Ache Pablo and Derwent Coloursoft pencils. I'm not sure how 'blue' to make the painting - whether I should warm it up a bit....these little prep pieces are a good way to try out different combinations.

You might remember these two little postcards sized sketches that I posted last year. They have been patiently sitting on my pin board waiting to be given attention. I wanted to develop the idea of looking into the light and also of verticals in a seascape without reverting to motifs of landmass or sails etc. Another theme that seems to be developing in some of my work is an aspect of minimalism. How far can I take a subject and subtract detail without losing it's essence? I seem to go from one extreme to the other capturing small details of shells and feathers and the next the opposite where I am painting just tone and colour. It keeps things interesting...

I have to admit I am really enjoying using these strong blues again, it has been a while. Intermittent warmer days have arrived and the blues are making me feel that Summer may just be around the corner - or at least a warmer Spring.

Sometimes the sea here is so still, quiet and calm it is unrecogniseable as the same body of water that menaces the coast during the October storms. As the days of summer are coming to an end and a coolness begins to stir in the evenings I look forward to the storms but for now it is good to reflect on the quieter times.

We are in the midst of our wonderful English summer. The weather is changeable with rainy days amongst warmer sunnier ones. It's a very English thing to complain about our summer rain but for a painter it can hold many opportunities. Whilst it can be chilly in the evenings it's not really cold and the cloud and moisture in the sky can make for some beautiful colours which are a challenge to capture. The rain is also great for the garden and saves me the chore of watering - win win!

I've just found out that both paintings I entered into the Red House Museum's open exhibition have been accepted. The subject for this years show was 'Light, Space and Time' and I submitted Silver Birch Moon and True Blue.

I'm looking forward to seeing the show when it opens on Saturday as I'm sure there will be a wonderful mix of work as in previous years. It's always interesting to see how a group of artists using different media and sources respond to the same theme. The exhibition runs until 26th January and details about the opening times of the museum can be found here.

True Blue - maybe..

Yesterday I was ready to call this painting done, today I am not so sure. There is something not quite right but I don't know what it is. Maybe it's the tone of the sand in the bottom right, too dark perhaps? Maybe it doesn't need the sand and I should continue the shallow water through to the bottom of the canvas. What would you suggest? Time spent painting this canvas has felt disjointed with everything else that has been going on. I'm feeling the if, buts and maybes... maybe I will just live with it a while longer....
