Such a busy week as I am restocking some new work into my Folksy Store. By Friday everything should be ready with the following pieces available;

As Black Friday races towards us I should also mention that my Red Bubble store has upto 60% off with many giftable items available and as ever my Society6 Store has offers going on too.

In between all of this activity I have also taken a break to look at some favourite treasures and getting inspired for some new work....

Across the Fields, Corfe - acrylic on board

Across the Fields   acrylic on board 18x18cm   ©2023LisaLeQuelenec

I love the way Corfe Castle looms into view as you drive towards the village. As you veer around the bend there it is, you know its close but forget how close. I like this view from across the fields too. It's well over a thousand years old and a much loved icon of Dorset.

Available in my Folksy Store

Limpet portraits - acrylic on board

Limpet Portraits 1-4   acrylic on canvas board 15x15cm   ©2023LisaLeQuelenec

The four shells lying vertically in the photo above are the subjects of these first four portraits. When you closely observe and compare them you can see so many differences, each having it's own characteristics and subtleties. Hopefully you can see better in this photo below.

I have been toying with the idea of using text within work for a while. The text in two of these paintings comes from notes I made about limpets from Wikipedia. During my research of these fascinating creatures I stumbled across a paper by Dr Louise Firth, Associate Professor of Marine Ecology at the University of Plymouth, titled What Have Limpets Ever Done for US? It is fascinating reading taking in thousands of years of cultural history all over the world as well as their importance within the ecosystem and many other threads besides. If you would like to delve into this fascinating read here is a link.

Limpets are extremely common in Jersey due to the island being surrounded by the perfect rocky habitat. As a child their common sight left me a little blind to collecting them and I rarely picked them up. However during the summer on a visit to La Hougue Bie Museum I learnt a little and saw how they were considered of such importance as to be placed within the Neolithic grave mound. During the Occupation when food was scarce they became an important source of food, supplementing meagre rations - not for the first time were they known as famine food (and not just in this location). The more I read, draw and paint these tough little critters the more respect I feel for them.

Sundown - oil on paper

Sundown II   oil on paper 13.5x13.5cm   ©2023LisaLeQuelenec

There have been some very cold but beautifully clear evenings the last few days. The colours are so inspiring and seem even more vibrant after weeks of pale grey skies. These small paintings may be the precursor to some larger paintings later in the year.

All three are available mounted in my Folksy store.

New Page Tab - Coastal & Quotes 2022

Heading to the beach ©LisaLeQuelenec2022

I have enjoyed building a collection again over the course of this year and as much as the planning and painting giving me lots to think about, the curating of the pieces - their running order and how they could be placed on walls has also been food for thought. I think I will work on another collection in this way next year, I already have a few ideas in mind, one is quite different to October's....

As these two photos show, if the weather the last couple of days is anything to go by there may not be quite so much time to research comfortably outside so there might be a bit more inspiration coming from things gathered and brought home.

Anyway I hope you have enjoyed this collection of paintings and thank you for following along. All the paintings from October are available for sale in my Folksy store here.  To see the collection in its entirety I have made a separate page here on the blog, just click on the tab at the top.

End of summer studio sale on Folksy

Something new for me.... a little end of summer studio sale.

I had a few paintings returned from an exhibition and as the mountboard colour has been discontinued I can no longer replicate the framing. So I thought I should pop them in the shop unframed at a discounted rate.

Looking around the studio and through my plan chest I have found a few more paintings and prints which I have made available at discounted rates. Some are older pieces that just haven't found a home yet, some were artist proof prints where I tested colours before editioning.

Shining seas - Old Harry Rocks acrylic on linen board

Shining Seas - Old Harry Rocks   20x20cm acrlic on linen board   ©2022LisaLeQuelenec

Something a little different from the prints I have been making of late....a return to acrylic. The inspiration for this painting came from an evening walk a long while back when the world felt much different. I have been thinking about how life felt back then...it feels like a lifetime ago. Covid-19 didn't exist and Russia was staying within its own borders. I do hope the people of Ukraine can feel safe in their homes once more in the not too distant future and the trauma of recent days comes to an end.

Softly, softly - seascapes in watercolour

Softly, softly   watercolour 14x24cm   ©2021LisaLeQuelenec

Summer seems so far away now....the pandemic and the various lock downs have skewed my sense of time so much..autumn felt springlike. I think even the seasons have been mixed up themselves as I see plants popping up through the soil that shouldn't be here for a few months yet and leaves only just coming off the trees that should have happened weeks ago. I'm no longer sure when things happened.. was it this year or was it the year before? Am I the only one to feel like this? It's chilly here so I think I will keep thinking of summer..

Both paintings available in my Folksy Store.

Sailing where the sea met the sky - watercolour

Sailing where the sea met the sky   watercolour   ©2020 LisaLeQuelenec

We have been treated to some beautiful sunsets this Autumn, absolute stunners full of firey reds and oranges with rich cerise and purples. Breath taking as they are, my favourite kind to paint are these more mellow late summer ones.

This painting is available in my Etsy store.

Blue on blue - Moonlit sea watercolour

Blue on Blue    watercolour 28x28cm   ©2021LisaLeQuelenec

A full moon from back in the summer twinkling on the sea in answer to the twinkling lights of the town in the distance. I am missing warm mellow evenings it feels distinctly chillier now.

Available in my Etsy store.

After having a huge studio sort and refurbish, I feel like I have now properly moved in. It took a bit longer than I had anticipated and weirdly even longer for the space to feel like it was mine. It was too pristine and intimidating with all the new work surfaces and furniture - I didn't feel like I could make a mess. I had to give myself a talking to and just crack on. Now I have so many new drawers to store things I am still hunting around to find what I am looking for but it does feel so much more organised. What a lovely 'problem' to have.

Interview - Meet the maker on the Folksy blog

Oooohhhh get me!  My exciting news! I have been interviewed on the Folksy Blog  in their Meet the maker series. To read the interview click here.

A really big thank you to Abi Jackson from  The Sage Apothecary for such great questions (her skincare looks amazing!) and to Camilla Westergaard from Folksy for the opportunity. It has been fun.

It looks like I will be taking over Folksy's instagram  @folksyhq  over the weekend for a few posts in a maker takeover....think of the mischief I could get up to 😉

Lockdown sky studies

Sky studies  10x10cm watercolour on paper   ©2020/21LisaLeQuelenec

During lockdown I spent a lot of time looking up. There were some fantastic coloured skies, the air seemed crisper and cleaner. Maybe due to a drop in pollution? I am fortunate to live within a short distance of the beach so could easily visit during the allowed exercise time/distance. It is only really now that I am starting to get used to seeing planes in the sky again and they are still alot more infrequent than before.

I started a series of 10x10cm watercolours inbetween the homeschooling, dog walking and in spare moments. I am starting to put these paintings into my Folksy store each measures 10x10cm and represents a quiet moment to forget about the stress of these troublesome times.

Winter walkies

Winter Walkies    watercolour on paper 40x40cm   ©2018LisaLeQuelenec

The winter walkies I have been experiencing haven't been quite as idyllic as this. Dark, dreary, soaking wet and blowing a gale have been more the order of the day this week but still a girl can dream.... It has made me very thankful for my waterproofs.

Ironically, in a way, water has been the essential element in painting these two pieces with very wet washes, glazing and minimal pigment. I have used a triad of Daniel Smith's sodalite, cobalt blue deep and yellow ochre light again. I love, love, love the granulations they produce and it has been good to work on a slightly larger scale again.

Both paintings are available in my Folksy store Seaside Studios UK.
