Walking the Dogs - lino monoprints

Charlie is a greyhound that I see regularly when I am walking my trusty studio assistant. He is quite the character, shy when spoken to directly, loving and sweet natured but rather vocal in his requests to play which for some is a little off putting. His long limbed elegance makes him an endearing model.

Jim the German Shepherd, friendly and floofy with an easy going smile and kind eyes. Likes scritches, gravy bones and snoozing in the sun.

Cleo, a lovely pup, full of lively puppy energy and rather ball obsessed. You'd never be able to forget 'arm day' with this doggo as every day is an endurance test of ball games.

New Dry points and mixed media beachscapes on Folksy

Well I'm not sure where September went but it has been busy! I have been having a bit of a jujjjjge around with all my shops making new store fronts, profile pictures and even a new blog banner (I hope that you like it) to refresh everything. It feels much more co-ordinated and coherent now - hopefully it will become more recognisable too around the interweb.

Of course I have also been creating some more work, I have just been lapse at getting it onto the blog - so many balls to juggle and so little time. I have been thinking hard about new ways to present work and I think sometimes it would be nice to show the inspiration behind my process. This is the latest set of work that I have produced over the last little while shown with the inspiration behind colour choices, shapes, marks and textures. I often have trouble putting that kind of thing into words but hope that these montages of images might go some way to explaining.

These will all be in my Folksy shop by Friday for Folksy's 'Shop Early for Christmas' weekend 7th-8th October.

Folksy Summer Exhibition

 

Well the best laid plans and all that.....I got to my 600th blog post and then went AWOL! Ooops! My apologies - where did July go again? Well I have been immensely busy but more on that next post. ...

My post today is to let you know about a wonderful online exhibition that I have been selected (over 700 entrants!) to be in at Folksy. So proud to have my watercolour, 'One Man and His Dog' selected as there is some stunning work by some very talented artists and crafts people. The exhibition is on for the whole of August.

Click on the exhibition image in my sidebar to have a look and do let me know what you think. There is a real range of styles, subjects and mediums as I scrolled through I was opening the links of shops that I wanted to explore further. I have been bookmarking all over as I know I will need to return when gift season gets started although I might just be starting early this year as I spotted some things that would be just perfect.

It seems we are to have another period of warmer weather before autumn gets underway. I will head to the beach earlier or later as it cools down - kinder to 'not-so-little-now' paws.

Winter walkies

The winter walkies I have been experiencing haven't been quite as idyllic as this. Dark, dreary, soaking wet and blowing a gale have been more the order of the day this week but still a girl can dream.... It has made me very thankful for my waterproofs.

Ironically, in a way, water has been the essential element in painting these two pieces with very wet washes, glazing and minimal pigment. I have used a triad of Daniel Smith's sodalite, cobalt blue deep and yellow ochre light again. I love, love, love the granulations they produce and it has been good to work on a slightly larger scale again.

The beach to themselves

Two collagraph monoprints with added coloured pencil - experiments with materials. I used a variety of materials on the collagraph plates - mostly different textured papers. For the sand ripples above I used sandpaper and in the piece below I glued loose sand to the plate before varnishing. It has given very different effects. As always it seems with collagraph the art is in the inking - I continue to learn with each and every print. It is such a satisfying process.

Subtle tones and barely there colour. A blanket of mist rolls in off the sea masking sight and sound.

(This one wasn't fun to try and photograph, the camera has bleached the colour a little too much.)

Have you ever been to the beach really, really early in the morning before anyone else has arrived with a low tide and pristine virgin sand? You can be alone with your thoughts enjoying the breeze listening to your breath and the sound of your footsteps that dissipates into the big empty stillness as you are slowly warmed by the sun.



The colour chart from a few posts back is certainly coming in useful. Just a touch of colour in the mix and the atmosphere has changed.

Just walking the dog

Wet sand, reflections and silhouettes fill my mind and sketchbooks at the moment. They are inspiring a new mini project. I watched an interview on Youtube with Fred Cuming one of my all time favourite artists which is where the quote in my sketchbook has come from. He said;

'I might be the only person in miles of open space.

It provides me with endlessly fascinating problems

of conveying something which is about nothing

more than emptiness.'

He sums up so eloquently what I am trying to achieve. Light, space, solitude and quiet. I often think of my sea and sky paintings as 'the big empties' and this feels an extension of that work. Maybe the addition of a figure exaggerates that notion. Time to explore...
