The Nine Daughters of Ran - first edition complete

Nine Daughters of Ran   print and mixed media   ©2025LisaLeQuelenec

The first set of Ran's daughters completed, each daughter mounted onto A4 paper with handprinted and painted net that binds them and suggests the presence of their mother Ran.

My intention had been to bind the daughters into a book format, a concertina so that they could be viewed in a linear format as below in this mock up.

I thought that this would be a good way of displaying the progression from calm to stormy waters, shallows to the deep. To be able to do this I think they need to be on a smaller scale and I should have thought through the practicalities at the beginning as needing to join sheets to make a long enough concertina became clumsy and distracting. If I were to exhibit and present this set I think they might actually work better framed individually so maybe this isn't as much of a set back as I made it in my  head.

I intend to do nine editions of the nine images using the same base lino blocks, each with different inking and different hand finishing - same sea but different tides - as each set of nine will be made over a long period of time I expect each to develop in different ways with different outcomes and I am thinking different ways of being presented. The idea of binding in a book isn't completely abandoned just yet and is probably something that I will return to, time will tell.

This first set is one that I will keep, a keystone for how the project will develop which may take some years. I am releasing them as prints on RedBubble  individually, in threes and as a print of all nine together in the formats below, they are also available as greeting cards.

As a February side quest for the darkest month this project has grown considerably, I had no idea at the start I would be completing just a first round in May. I am hoping that I will discover more about the mythology surrounding these ladies and also parallels with other myths from around the world their commonality and differences; the sirens, selkies and mermaids come to mind and I am sure there are many others as I cast nets in waters outside of Europe. I am sure that these stories passed along trade routes with a bit from here and a bit from there added and missed along the way but with a core of similarities. Maybe you have suggestions that I could research I would love to hear.

Daringly Deco Scallops - new design available at Spoonflower & RedBubble

New designs added to my Coastal Collections of fabric, wallpaper, home accessories & gifts at Spoonflower and RedBubble. The scallop design features a reworking of a watercolour painting and the undulations with it made a subtle nod to Art Deco. I really enjoy working on patterns and putting collections together but I find thinking of names very HARD! If you have any coastal themed suggestions I would really appreciate the help.

The second design, Wave Stripes, (can you see what I did there?) is among new co-ordinates for the collection. There are also plains, spots, pinstripes and ticking stripes available and lots more. I recently made some patchwork grids using a selection of the designs by colour too.

New Collection - Ginkgo Leaves fabric & wallpaper - drypoint prints too

Ginkgo Leaves in Golden Yellow - new collection available as fabric and wallpaper on Spoonflower and as accessories and soft furnishings at RedBubble   ©2025LisaLeQuelenec

If you have been reading along on this blog for a while you may remember looking through a sketchbook that I started somewhere near the beginning that was just for ginkgo drawings and experiments. I was/am obsessed with the trees, I find them fascinating; the history, medical properties, their ability to survive what ever has been thrown at them as a species. I have a mental map of ginkgo's in my area and add to it when I spot them in places out of town that I visit.

Whilst having a tidy of the work room last year I stumbled upon the book, I haven't given it much thought for nearly a decade but as I flipped through I started seeing potential for surface pattern making.

So here it is a new collection Ginkgo Leaves, the product of a few months work. All designs are  available at Spoonflower in a beautiful range of fabrics and wallpaper finishes. For accessories, stationery and home goods the designs are available at RedBubble. I have made the collection available in four colourways with co-ordinating solid colours, pinstripes and patchworks. Do you have a favourite? It is a toss up between the golden yellow and aqua for me.

***Please forgive me as each image I have used here includes the details of mine and Spoonflowers name but as the images get pinned and shared it is useful to me to have the name in it so people can find the products.

Some designs are larger scale than others and they can all be mixed and matched within their colour groups. As an example Falling Ginkgo Leaves below is available in the different tones within the yellow group and on a variety of fabrics from cotton and linen to velvet and chiffon and many others.

There are seven different options in wallpaper, I love the silver metallic finish which gives a soft and subtle sheen.

As if that wasn't enough to stop my satisfy my yearning to see these trees in leaf I also have two new drypoint prints (available in my Etsy and Folksy stores;

A new print edition in the making...Silence & Snow

I have had an image whirling around in my minds eye, a seed that has started to grow for a while. There is a very early version, more of a sketch at the time from some years back that I have always had on my list to explore further. Recently I have decided to just get on with it - enough with the procrastination.

Starting to carve Silence & Snow....©2024LisaLeQuelenec

Below is the scribbly sketch of the idea.... you can see the folds in the paper that gave me guidelines for the composition using the rule of thirds. I am very much inspired by Japanese woodblock prints, the style and minimalism, and although that doesn't show at all in the sketch I think it will be obvious in the prints.

Before printing the carved block I printed an uncarved block to give a base colour using very thin ink. For the initial prints I don't want to show any of the white paper - I'm sure this will change as I explore further and experiment with different colours and tones. My thinking is to create different versions using colour, extra elements and possibly adding tissue paper chine colle at some point. I would like to evoke the magical gloaming as night falls, hazy, misty and frosty nights, possibly a few prints inspired by the recent Northern Lights displays, then maybe warmer winter sunshine. Can I do all of these with one image? I want to experiment to find out, I haven't done this using this technique before nor on this scale which is somewhat larger that I have done before in print.

This is one of the first prints with the second layer added. I felt like something was missing and out of balance - I wasn't getting the depth that I could see in my mind...

Testing a third block addition ©2024LisaLeQuelenec

Using a small piece of the soft carve lino I cut a third mini block of tree silhouettes to add to the right of the composition. This gave much more depth and balance, now to experiment.

This is one of the first prints that I felt happy with. I like the looming distant trees and the frosty haze that is lighting up the sky as it descends. I have printed on my usual bright white paper but it didn't feel right with the warmer blues so I have ripped the edges of the prints up to the image margins and mounted them on a warmer off white paper for the warmer blues and a softer white for the cooler ones. I think if I continue to do this it will give some continuity to all the prints in the series despite some big variations in colour and other additions. It will also add some opportunity to contrast a different texture with the backing paper that will show when it is framed.

Cropping changes the composition and feel of the image, I might go back into the square versions and add additional tree silhouettes in between.

I have just a few prints that I am happy with so far and will add to both my Folksy and Etsy stores. In addition I will put a version on RedBubble as I think it will work well as a holiday card.

Any way this has very much kept me out of mischief, what do you think?

Sundial shell pattern collections

Sundial Collection in Teal swatches - fabric, wallpaper, home accessories and accessories available at Spoonflower and RedBubble ©2024LisaLeQuelenec

Always a sucker for a spiral, I love these sundial shells. I love the bottom face as much as the more pronounced swirl on the top. The beautiful spiralling circles in this particular one called to me.

This one little shell has inspired a whole collection of repeat patterns available as fabric, wallpaper and home accessories at Spoonflower and as clothing, accessories and home accessories in my RedBubble Store.

Of course no collection is complete without being available in a selection of colours. Whilst teal is my favourite there is also duck egg, chartreuse, and claret with forest green and navy being the latest versions of the designs. Co-ordinating pinstripes, plains and seigaiha wave/scale patterns are also within the collections.

As I work more with pattern making I am discovering that I often reach for far richer and bolder colours that I would never use in my painting or printing. I am wondering if, as I continue, this may change. It is interesting to stand back and watch the creative paths converge and diverge, one often feeding the ideas of another.

Which colour is your favourite?

New repeat pattern - Coastal collection trellis design

I have a new pattern to share, an addition to my Coastal Collection on Spoonflower. This trellis design features motifs used in the collection and is available in the same colourways to co-ordinate with all the previous designs.

Each of the neutrals and blues side by side for comparison. I am in the process of revising the designs to add an additional white background to all the co-ordinates in the collection if blue and crisp white is more your style.

Above are some of the co-ordinating designs available.

Recently Spoonflower have added metallic silver and gold to their wallpaper range. I am not normally a shiny kind of girl but I have fallen in love the way the blue on taupe colours have printed on silver. My absolute favourite though is how the navy version looks on silver and gold - so rich and dramatic, it completely changes the feel. I haven't really thought about how coastal themes could be used to such effect but I rather like it.

Each of the colours, along with the co-ordinating patterns and plains can be found in their own collection here on the collections page in my store.

Alternatively the design can also be found in my RedBubble store in the Coastal Collection there. The motifs are also available as framed prints in each colour variation with framing options.

I find it so thrilling that the technology and platforms exist that enable creatives to design and produce such a range of ideas and products. I never dreamed that I would be able to do this at the beginning of my career. Exciting times!

Delicate Waves - Japandi on Spoonflower

Delicate Waves ©2024LisaLeQuelenec

Between all the collaging and printing experiments for the pebble series, I have been working on a new design to compliment the Coastal Collection that I brought out on Spoonflower and RedBubble. The design is made in various combinations for this collection and also for some others that are being worked on in the background (more on those later).

Of course I favour all the blue and blue/green combinations but I also have versions in neutrals and pinks available. You can find the design on different types of fabric, wallpaper and home accessories on Spoonflower in it's own collection Delicate waves - Japandi or within the separate collections that the colourway compliments. I have also uploaded it into my RedBubble Store where it can be purchased on even more products including clothing and accessories.
