Silence & snow - the series continues...

Silence & Snow  original lino print varied open edition ©2024LisaLeQuelenec

Oh the irony....I am having a very silent time with an ear infection. Much nicer to imagine the silence of snow which they appear to be having further north -  drizzly rain for us in the south.

My prints have finally dried and they are available in my Etsy and Folksy stores.

Sundown - oil on paper

Sundown II   oil on paper 13.5x13.5cm   ©2023LisaLeQuelenec

There have been some very cold but beautifully clear evenings the last few days. The colours are so inspiring and seem even more vibrant after weeks of pale grey skies. These small paintings may be the precursor to some larger paintings later in the year.

All three are available mounted in my Folksy store.

6 Sound of silence - acrylic on board

Sound of Silence   10x10cm acrylic on board    ©2022LisaLeQuelenec

'When you sit in silence long enough, you learn that silence has a motion.

It glides over you without any shape or form, exactly like water.

Its colour is silver. And silence has a sound you only hear after hours

of wading in it. The sound is soft, like flute notes rising up,

like the words of glass speaking.'

4 Miles of open space - acrylic on board

Miles of Open Space   10x10cm acrylic on linen board   ©2022LisaLeQuelenec

A quote from one of my heroes whom we sadly lost this year.

'I might be the only person in miles of open space. It provides me with endlessly fascinating problems of conveying something which is about nothing more than emptiness.'

Transitions collagraphs

Transitions I - V  collagraphs xcm ©2021LisaLeQuelenec

I love this time of year when the light mellows from summer to autumn. Mornings of mist and earlier evenings, colours change subtley at first and all the summer green retreats to gold and bronze. This is the time of the harvest moon, still time to pick the last berries from the hedgerows before the late autumn storms that will arrive. We have had so little rain here now for weeks, the fields where I walk have looked parched for a while and the ground is so hard. For now I will enjoy the autumn sun and look forward to the storms that will eventually come. The wild weather that churns the sea and throws pockets full of treasure to the shore for a different kind of hunting and gathering.

All five prints are available in my Folksy store here.

Warming up my palette - dog days of summer

Walking the Dog paintings, watercolour colour notes and inspiration   ©2019LisaLeQuelenec

It seems we are to have another period of warmer weather before autumn gets underway. I will head to the beach earlier or later as it cools down - kinder to 'not-so-little-now' paws.

A change of palette and a change of mood. I can't fail to be inspired by the autumn colours that are starting to appear. I love the golden light of autumn as it burnishes the landscape.

Sketchbooks are very precious to me. Pages like this one come in very useful as references for paintings sometimes months or years later. Looking through the pages remind me of the location, thoughts and feelings, the light and colours and many more details that wouldn't be apparent to anyone else looking at quick and sometimes clumsy pencil sketches.

Summer's Whisper - tonal value check ©2016LisaLeQuelenec

Inspired by a walk I had during the summer on a long hazy warm beach with just a gentle breeze for company. Very tranquil and relaxing...

It has been some time since I have painted on a larger scale and it was nice to stretch my wings a little. I have included a black and white photo of the finished piece to show the tonal range. I often take photos and convert them to black and white as I paint a piece so that I can check the tonal values as a painting progresses.

This new deep edged box canvas is available on Etsy at Seaside Studios UK.

Dreaming of summer sun

Summer sun   acrylic on paper 13x13cm   ©2016Lisa Le Quelenec

After the storms over the weekend a bright winter sun has made an appearance, I am grateful for the light. I find February the hardest month of the year - the last slog before spring and brighter, warmer days. I always dream of summer heat and walking barefoot on the sand. This little painting is the result of my wishful thinking....and a celebration for being nearly halfway through the month.

Summer Evening   acrylic on paper 14x14cm   ©2015Lisa Le Quelenec

Sometimes the sea here is so still, quiet and calm it is unrecogniseable as the same body of water that menaces the coast during the October storms. As the days of summer are coming to an end and a coolness begins to stir in the evenings I look forward to the storms but for now it is good to reflect on the quieter times.

Watercolour vignettes

I am fascinated by Turner's watercolour vignettes which you can see and read about here. It is interesting that the vignettes that he did weren't intended as paintings in their own right but as pieces to be translated into print that were subordinate to the text that they accompanied. In my opinion they are all little gems.

It has prompted me to look again at breaking out of the formal constraints of the rectangular or square format of paper and canvas which can lead to something altogether more interesting. This is something I explored briefly some years back but hadn't returned to. Whilst my explorations are no where near as free flowing and randomly shaped as Turner's it might be the start of a journey that develops in that vein. To have the same confidence in guiding the paint rather than controlling it is definitely something that I aspire to.

I have presented these part circular paintings within a square aperture mount which reinforces the formality that I am breaking away from. I like the tension between the formal and the chaotic. Where this will lead I have no idea but it is an interesting idea to experiment with.

Sunset sketch

sunset sketch   watercolour 20x20cm   ©2014Lisa Le Quelenec

I love how sometimes the sun seems to set the clouds on fire..... so challenging to paint. One day I will crack it. A really difficult sketch to photograph, I think it is too contrasty for my camera to cope with so it has greyed out somewhat...

There is so little time to paint now as the little one is on the move and not sleeping so much ;o)

Summer Evening

Summer Evening   22x22cm  watercolour  ©2013Lisa Le Quelenec

We are in the midst of our wonderful English summer. The weather is changeable with rainy days amongst warmer sunnier ones. It's a very English thing to complain about our summer rain but for a painter it can hold many opportunities. Whilst it can be chilly in the evenings it's not really cold and the cloud and moisture in the sky can make for some beautiful colours which are a challenge to capture. The rain is also great for the garden and saves me the chore of watering - win win!

Watercolour sunset skies

Sky Study VI  watercolour 18x9cm   ©2013Lisa Le Quelenec

Sky Study VII   watercolour 18x9cm   ©2013Lisa Le Quelenec

We have been treated to some wonderful skies just lately. The colours are so beautiful and so difficult to mix.

There hasn't been much time for painting just recently as I've been preparing for an exhibition but the quick snatches of time to pick up the brushes and play with colour have made for lovely breaks. I'm really looking forward to hanging the show tonight and seeing all the work from my fellow exhibitors.
