5 Sunrise - acrylic on board

'...my ability to convey my experience of the sunrise would depend, first,

on my having mastered an abstract language and, second,

on someone else (the viewer) having mastered it too.'

4 Miles of open space - acrylic on board

Miles of Open Space   10x10cm acrylic on linen board   ©2022LisaLeQuelenec

A quote from one of my heroes whom we sadly lost this year.

'I might be the only person in miles of open space. It provides me with endlessly fascinating problems of conveying something which is about nothing more than emptiness.'

'gentle

serenade of flight,

snow arrow serene

ship in a transparent storm,

steady, you soar

while

the hoarse wind sweeps

the meadows of the sky.'

1 Sea Mist - acrylic on linen board

Here is the finished painting....

Sea Mist acrylic 20x20cm   ©LisaLeQuelenec2022

I thought I would try a little video....I hope it worked...

From now until October 31st I will be posting a painting a day that I have made over Spring and Summer. Some have been inspired by a quote from poetry or literature, things that I felt important enough to jot down in notebooks and sketchbooks over the years. For others the quote found me after the painting had been made and just seemed to fit perfectly. Either way I hope you enjoy the series.

The inspiration for this painting came from a poem by Clinton Scollard called The Mist and the Sea'

'The mist crept in from the sea

Out of the void and the vast;

And bore the silver rain

A shimmering guest in its train...'

                                                                                              Clinton Scollard

The rest of the poem is beautiful, I loved the imagery that it captured and the gentle rhythms of its flow.

This painting is available in my Folksy store.

End of summer studio sale on Folksy

Something new for me.... a little end of summer studio sale.

I had a few paintings returned from an exhibition and as the mountboard colour has been discontinued I can no longer replicate the framing. So I thought I should pop them in the shop unframed at a discounted rate.

Looking around the studio and through my plan chest I have found a few more paintings and prints which I have made available at discounted rates. Some are older pieces that just haven't found a home yet, some were artist proof prints where I tested colours before editioning.

Collections of pebbles and hag stones in monoprint

Collection I   collagraph monoprint   29x19cm   ©2022LisaLeQuelenec

I have been experimenting and exploring again this time the shapes and textures in pebbles gathered locally. They are a geological history of this part of the coast whose history fascinates me. I often wonder at how different it must have looked with the Isle of Wight's Needles still joined to Old Harry Rocks and where was it exactly that the sea breached and eroded to form the two iconic landmarks that gives us the beach we enjoy today. Was it where Poole harbour is? Being the second largest natural harbour in the world could make it a possibility...or did that come later as the water found the lowest point to pool in and wash away the softer land? These are things that I ponder as I walk along the beach picking up pebbles and looking through the hag stones that have been pushed around by the tide. How much of this history has this pebble seen? Or this one?

My experiments have taken the form of collagraph making individual plates of each stone, choosing textures to describe each pebble individually and then intuitively placing them to print in different combinations. It has the element of chance and surprise for me that echoes the way that I gather the pebbles they have been inspired by. The process is long as each pebble plate is inked separately again echoing the process that formed the rock.

Colours are taken directly from the source material but are also reflected back at me on my walks as the lack of rain and very hot, dry weather are parching the land. I haven't known the river to be so low, even at high tide it doesn't look the same. We have warnings along the coast to be mindful that the heat may produce cliff falls - the process continues to shape the land just as it did to shape the pebbles in my hand.

Tradition says that the fairy folk can be seen through a hag stone but I have only spied a 'polar bear' ;o)  Have you seen the Wight bear?

All of the above prints are available in my Folksy Store.

A trip home....and refilling the inspiration well

I have just come back from a trip home (I call it home even though I haven't actually lived there for nearly thirty years..) to Jersey. It had been far too long. My last stay had been pre-covid.  It was lovely to catch up with my folks and walk along the beaches which are so different to the ones in Dorset. For a start there is a much, much wider tidal ranges so interesting treasures are waiting to be found that are left by the tide. Also my eyes were opened to just how much litter is unfortunately left on the beach in Bournemouth during the summer, which is a sad observation to make. Jersey beaches are immaculately clean at any time of day or evening.

Anyway I thought I would bore you with some holiday snaps ;o)

So many colours, shapes and textures.. I think a lifetimes work could be made just within these nine photos.

Whilst on the way to visit the Maritime Museum I was fascinated by the reflection patterns in the marina. The museum is absolutely wonderful and I would definitely recommend a visit.

We fitted in two castles and La Hougue Bie Museum too. The passage grave at La Hougue Bie is thought to be one of the ten oldest buildings in the world! It was lovely and cool to walk doubled over and crablike through the tunnel on what was a very hot day.

Unfortunately we came across this compass jellyfish left by the tide on one of our beach walks. Such a beautiful pattern of markings, I think I will be revisiting this page in the not too distant future.

As you can see someone else enjoyed her first visit too, especially the paddling and extra treats from Nanny and Grumpy.

So lots of new inspiration and ideas are now whizzing through head and waiting to emerge from my brushes.
