Last week I took advantage of an unexpected free afternoon to go down to the beach for some sketching. I sat on the sliver of dunes that run between the beach and the land that runs towards Hengistbury Head. There was quite a breeze coming off the sea that day but I found a sheltered little spot and hunkered down for the afternoon.
The first sketch was watercolour and whilst I was happy with the sky and half of the water I just lost it halfway down the page, so I attacked it with coloured pencil. The second sketch is lightly better, as the sun had moved around it gave some beautiful shadows that just cried out to be done in pastel. Both sketches are slightly smaller than A4.

Hi Lisa. I really like them both but I think pastel is a better medium overall for earthy sketches like beaches and dunes so I agree with you that the second one is better.
I agree, they both give a strong impression of sand and sea, but the pastel just edges out and softens the scene. Those purple shadows are divine.
Hi Michael, thank you. Watercolour seemed like a good idea at the time but the wind and sun dried them really quickly. I should have known better... doh!
Hi Jeanette, I seem to have made an unwritten rule somewhere along the way that I can't use pastel without using purple somewhere. It's just delicious for shadows on sand. Thank you for commenting.
The pastel work is really nice. It really captured atmosphere so well and I like the purple shadows of the reeds. Thank you for sharing your sketches with us. They are lovely.
Both are lovely but I, too, prefer the pastel - softer, more appropriate for the subject, beautiful shadows, etc. Thanks for sharing :)

Hello Rhonda, you are right the pastel is more appropriate. I let myself get too ticked off with the watercolour and then got heavy handed with the pencils... :o)
