Scintillating - drypoint etching print

Taking a line for a walk  sketchbook page 8x15cm approx   ©2025LisaLeQuelenec

I have so many sketches like this - scribbly lines that I have drawn trying to capture the lines and movement in wind disturbed water. I must have spent days maybe weeks worth of hours watching and listening to where the breeze ruckles and ruffles one area more than another, looking at edges and tonal patterns, feeling the differentials of air, smelling and tasting the salt, observing the sun scintillating across the surface. Although a full sensory experience it is also a calming and soothing way to spend time, maybe the hypnotic patterns blow away any worries that I have.

Taking a number of sketches and memories I have made a drypoint which I think maybe the first in a series of explorations of these scribbles and thoughtnotes.

Shades of Autumn II - Oak drypoint prints

Oak variable edition drypoint print 8x7.5cm available individually ©2024LisaLeQuelenec

I made a sister print to last weeks Acorns and have popped a couple of variations into both my Etsy and Folksy stores. I rather like working in this way and having colour variations.

The one below is in Folksy.

I am still working on some larger drypoints of stormy skies and seas but having been rather enjoying the dry spells of sunny weather between the storms so progress has been slower. We have had lots of reference weather to help things along though....my gosh the rain! Obviously nothing compared to the weather some American friends seem to be enduring at the moment though, I do hope they manage to stay safe.

Shades of Autumn - Acorns drypoint prints

Acorns variable edition drypoint print 8x7.5cm available individually ©2024LisaLeQuelenec

Acorns that found their way into my pocket whilst out walking my dog. Each printed in a different autumnal shade and one in a soft warm charcoal black. I have two proof prints made whilst the plate was being tested for the edition which I may work into with mixed media at a later date. I have put a couple of the prints in both my Etsy and Folksy stores.

I enjoyed printing the edition one print after another mixing the ink as I went adding to the colour left by the previous mix. I think I may do more of these with different motifs. It was nice to try something different.

Headland and a Sudden Shower - etching and drypoint prints

Headland    etching 6x6cm   ©2024LisaLeQuelenec

It certainly is starting to feel autumnal now with noticeably darker mornings and evenings. Occasionally more dramatic skies and rain showers and a mellowness in the air. I have been reprinting and restocking some of my older plates which are now available in my Etsy Store with prints from these edition at Folksy too.

I have been inspired to work on some new larger prints. I am still in the platemaking and testing stage but hope to have something to show soon. Below are the initial sketchbook thumbnails - these are tiny inch square sketches/ideas - I am working out how to translate them into larger images, how far I can push the boundaries of the plate size before the image is lost.

New Dry points and mixed media beachscapes on Folksy

Well I'm not sure where September went but it has been busy! I have been having a bit of a jujjjjge around with all my shops making new store fronts, profile pictures and even a new blog banner (I hope that you like it) to refresh everything. It feels much more co-ordinated and coherent now - hopefully it will become more recognisable too around the interweb.

Of course I have also been creating some more work, I have just been lapse at getting it onto the blog - so many balls to juggle and so little time. I have been thinking hard about new ways to present work and I think sometimes it would be nice to show the inspiration behind my process. This is the latest set of work that I have produced over the last little while shown with the inspiration behind colour choices, shapes, marks and textures. I often have trouble putting that kind of thing into words but hope that these montages of images might go some way to explaining.

These will all be in my Folksy shop by Friday for Folksy's 'Shop Early for Christmas' weekend 7th-8th October.

Drypoints and mixed media experiments...

Sea Air, A bit of Weather and Bracing!   8x15cm drypoint with mixed media   ©2022LisaLeQuelenec

I treated myself to some new paint last week... Gansai Tambi watercolours - Starry colours made by Kuretake. Oooohhhh they are lovely, I particularly like the paler colours which are shimmery but not opaque. I have used pearlescent inks before but have been disappointed with the outcome. These watercolours are much better for the effect that I was after.

Using test prints from the previous drypoint I have added shimmer in certain areas whilst leaving others with just the original ink. I have photographed them above straight on and to angle so you can see how they catch the light. I think it would be easy to overwork a piece with the shimmer and I may need to rein in my enthusiasm but I can definitely see possibilities.... What do you think?

These and prints from the edition are available in my Folksy store.

Two more for the series and I am really enjoying the tall format. Again, each of the prints is a little bit different in the inking.

Sea Air - getting inky in drypoint printmaking

Sea Air print on the right - inked plate on the left   8x15cm

It has been an inky mucky week - highly enjoyable.I have been working from my sketchbook in the previous post on some dry points. Each print is a little different as I adjust and experiment with the inking process.

Shore - variations in colour - drypoint

Shore   drypoint 8.8x15cm   ©2021 LisaLeQuelenec

A varied edition of 15 'Shore' each print will be an experiment in printing different combinations of mulitple colours which is something I haven't really tried before. This is part of my challenge to widen my palette this year.

These prints are available at Folksy.

Arriving storm - drypoint with collagraph

We have had some spectacular weather the past week or so...lashing rain, howling wind, there have also been some breathtakingly beautiful sunsets. I love Autumn and all its changeability, I am looking forward to seeing the changing colours. It won't be long now I think.

The storms have been quite something and have been prompting some new work.

Storm at Sea   14x14cm drypoint with collagraph monoprint   ©2019LisaLe Quelenec

A mixture of techniques have been used to make this print - there are areas of drypoint and collagraph and due to the disintegration of the plate in the sky area each time it travelled through the press, each print has altered and arrives at the other side appearing quite different. I like the idea of the plate physically eroding like the coastline it is depicting in the storm.

This print is available at Seaside Studios UK.

Etchings and drypoint prints shop updates

I have been catching up on printing for both SeasidestudiosUk on Etsy and Seasidestudiosuk on Folksy. There are now prints from both the 'Summer's Eve' , 'Ammonite' and 'Feather I' editions available for sale. All three are variable editions and each print that I do is unique in the handling of the ink and the overall effect of the print.

Pine cones - it started with some sketches....

Pine cone sketches   pencil ink and watercolour   ©2017Lisa Le Quelenec

...and quickly got out of hand... but in a good way. I love the structure of pine cones, such a challenge to get 'right'. There is a park I visit with my little one that guarantees we will come home with at least a few we are both as bad as each other with our little collections and we added quite a few more this summer.

Sketches and doodles turned into...
